The real cost of running iMessage on a Mac mini in a closet

Every company that wants to text customers on iMessage discovers the same trick: buy a Mac mini, sign in with an Apple ID, wire it up to some automation glue, and hide it in a closet. It works on day one. That first blue bubble feels like a superpower.

Then it becomes your job. Not your product, not your customers. The Mac mini.

What actually breaks

macOS updates land whenever Apple decides, and an unattended update can log your machine out of Messages overnight. Your line goes quiet and nobody tells you. The first person to notice is a customer who never got an answer.

Apple IDs used for automation get flagged. Sign-in challenges show up at 2am. Sending patterns that look automated can get an account rate-limited or killed, and there is no support line to appeal to. When that Apple ID dies, your number and your open conversations die with it.

And it is a single machine. One power flicker, one full disk, one corrupted login session, and every conversation your business was having stops mid-thread. There is no failover closet.

The honest math

Say the closet setup costs you four hours a month of engineer time between updates, monitoring, and the occasional resurrection. At contractor rates that is several hundred dollars a month before you count a single outage.

Then count the outage. If your line answers sales questions and books appointments, a quiet weekend is not an inconvenience, it is revenue that texted a competitor instead. Self-hosting looks free the way a boat looks free.

For comparison, dedicated-line products on the market mostly price between $225 and $289 a month. Comms runs a dedicated iMessage line at $200 a month, with no per-seat fees on top. The closet was never actually cheaper, it just billed you in weekends.

What a managed line does differently

Comms runs the infrastructure the closet was pretending to be. Lines are monitored continuously, and we publish live uptime for iMessage delivery and verification codes right on the site. Over the last day that number sits above 99.8 percent, and you can check it whenever you like instead of taking our word for it.

Deliverability is managed at the fleet level: sending behavior, warm-up, and health checks are handled for you, so one enthusiastic campaign does not put your line at risk. Compliance is built in too. STOP and opt-out handling run at the platform level, before any AI or automation touches a message.

Your agents, your instructions, and your conversations live above all of that. If you outgrow a line, you add another. Nothing lives or dies with one Apple ID on one machine.

Switching takes less time than a macOS update

You can start free on a shared line and see your first blue bubble in about thirty seconds: describe your agent in plain English, or grab an API key and send through the API. When you want your own number and area code, a dedicated line is one click and $200 a month.

Unplug the Mac mini. Put a plant on it. It makes a decent shelf.
